Is SMP a good option for a thinning crown?

Quick answer

Yes, SMP can suit a man with a diffuse thinning crown, particularly when he wants to keep some hair rather than shave completely. I use density treatment to reduce the contrast between scalp and existing hair. It cannot regrow hair, stop hair loss or create the appearance of a completely full scalp.

How does SMP help a diffuse thinning crown?

When I assess scalp micropigmentation for crown thinning, I look at the whole thinning pattern, not just the area where the scalp is most visible. The crown, mid-scalp, temples and frontal hairline need to work together visually.

Male density SMP places small pigment impressions between existing hairs. These reduce the contrast between your scalp and hair, so the crown can look less see-through. Your natural hair remains part of the result, which is why the shade, hair length, density and direction of growth all matter.

This is different from a shaved-head finish. If your loss becomes more advanced, a closely cropped or fully shaved style may blend more consistently. If you prefer to keep some length, density work may be the more suitable approach. I explain both options during a scalp micropigmentation treatment.

SMP is camouflage, not a hair-loss treatment. It does not stimulate growth, alter your follicles or prevent further thinning. If your hair loss is changing quickly, I will also consider whether the design could continue to look balanced as the pattern develops.

What makes someone suitable for SMP for a thinning crown?

The best starting point is a stable, healthy scalp and realistic expectations. You need to be comfortable with some natural scalp showing through. A convincing density result should not look like a solid layer of paint over the crown.

I will ask about your hair-loss history, current treatments, skin health and how you normally wear your hair. Active scalp acne, eczema or a psoriasis flare-up should be resolved before treatment. Anyone with a history of keloid scarring should speak to a dermatologist first, as tattooing can trigger abnormal scarring.

Please tell me about allergies, medication and relevant health conditions before we proceed. Reviewing healed examples of an artist's work is important, especially healed hairlines and density work. A fresh photograph immediately after treatment does not show how the pigment will settle.

At Scalp Revive in Alwoodley, Leeds, I provide a free consultation so we can examine the crown in person and discuss whether density, a shaved finish or no treatment is the sensible choice.

How do I plan the crown and hairline?

A crown cannot be designed in isolation. I assess the existing hairline, temple recession and the way your hair naturally falls. Bringing the front forward too aggressively while leaving a diffuse crown untreated can make the overall result look disconnected.

For a natural appearance, I normally favour a soft hairline that follows your age, facial structure and existing pattern. A hairline that is too straight, dark or dense can draw attention to the treatment. This is why I recommend prioritising an artist's hairline work when comparing practitioners, not just close-up images of the crown.

Pigment is selected to match your current follicle or hair colour. I begin conservatively, using lighter density and wider spacing before adding detail in later sessions. This allows the colour and placement to be assessed as the skin settles, rather than committing to an overly strong result on the first appointment.

How many sessions does crown density treatment involve?

The number of sessions depends on the area and your hair, and I will confirm the plan at consultation. The exact plan depends on the area, the amount of existing hair, your skin and the level of contrast you want to reduce. Appointment length depends on the work required.

Before starting, I wash and assess the scalp, mark the treatment area and agree the design with you. I then match the pigment and use topical numbing as appropriate. The work is built in layers, rather than trying to create maximum density at once.

The colour can look stronger at first and then soften as the scalp settles. Lightening during healing is normal. I review the result before deciding whether further pigment or detail is needed.

You can read more about how I approach thinning at the front in my guide to SMP density for a receding hairline. The same principle applies to the crown: the treatment should follow your complete pattern and the way you intend to wear your hair.

What is the aftercare for scalp micropigmentation?

After each session, follow the specific instructions I give you. General good-practice guidance is to keep the scalp dry, avoid washing, sweating, heavy exercise, hot showers, steam rooms and direct sun exposure for the initial period advised. Do not pick or interfere with any flaking.

For the first four days, avoid wetting the treated scalp and excessive sweating. Gentle washing can usually resume afterwards according to the treatment plan. Avoid swimming pools, saunas and steam rooms for 28 days after the final treatment, and protect the scalp from the sun during this period. Once healed, use SPF and moisturise as advised.

Full settling can take approximately 30 days. If you notice worsening redness, warmth, pus, drainage, severe pain, fever or unusual swelling, contact a healthcare provider. For a concern that differs from what we discussed, contact me promptly.

Because hair loss can change, your future plan may need reviewing. My guide to what happens to SMP when hair loss changes explains why planning for the longer term matters.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my hair long after crown density SMP?

Yes, density SMP is intended for men who prefer not to shave. However, the hair still needs to be groomed so the pigment and natural hair blend. Very long or heavily styled hair may reveal the thinning from different angles, so I assess your usual length and styling during consultation.

Will SMP make my crown look completely full?

No. SMP reduces visible contrast between scalp and hair, but it does not recreate follicles or increase hair volume. A small amount of scalp showing is normal. I would rather create a restrained result that follows your existing density than make the crown look unnaturally dark or solid.

Does crown SMP stop male pattern hair loss?

No. SMP is a cosmetic camouflage procedure and does not alter the cause of male pattern hair loss. Your natural hair may continue to thin after treatment. This is why I consider possible future changes and avoid designing only the currently visible patch without assessing the rest of the scalp.

Can SMP be used if I have very fine hair on the crown?

It may be possible, but very fine hair creates less natural coverage to blend with the pigment. I assess the amount, colour and distribution of your remaining hair, as well as how you style it. In some cases, a shorter or shaved look may provide a more consistent visual result.

Is crown SMP painful?

SMP involves repeated small pigment impressions and can cause some discomfort, though it is generally minimal. I discuss sensitivity and numbing options before starting. Your comfort, skin condition and the size of the area all influence what the appointment feels like.

How long does crown SMP last?

SMP is intended to be long-lasting, but it gradually fades rather than remaining unchanged. Longevity varies with sun exposure, skin type, skin ageing and lifestyle. Many people consider a refresh after several years.

Can SMP be removed if I change my mind?

Laser removal can remove SMP, but it is an additional process and may be more difficult if the original pigment was placed too deeply or has blurred. That is why conservative design, suitable pigment placement and a thorough consultation matter before any permanent cosmetic treatment.
